S. S. Van Dine is a pen name used by American detective story's writer and art critic Willard Huntington Wright (15 October 1888 – 11 April 1939). He created Philo Vance, a sleuth and aesthete fictional character featured in 12 crime novels. The novels were chronicled by his friend Van Dine, that appears as a Dr. Watson figure.
