Conradin, a sickly ten-year-old boy lives with his cousin and guardian, Mrs. De Ropp. He hates her with a desperate sincerity and feels unhappy himself. The only friend he has is a polecat-ferret whom he calls Sredni Vashtar.  He secretly takes care of him and invents a religion of his own with Sredni Vashtar as the merciless and vengeful god. Conradin keeps the ferret hidden in a cage in the garden shed, and worships the idol in secret. The story comes to a culmination when Mrs. De Ropp once discovers his god…
