The book “A Very Special Mother” was awarded "The best children´s Book in Iceland in 2008" by The Reykjavik Capital Educational Committee .
The book is about a girl who grows up with a deaf mother. The author describes candidly the emotions of the girl and the reactions of society to deafness, along with comical, entertaining family life. The book is now updated and translated to an iBook in English. The book is also available in German and the Icelandic iBook offers read aloud text and Sign Language.
Margrét E. Laxness illustrated the book and her drawings work exceptionally well with the story. A Very Special Mother is intended for children in the oldest divisions of preschool and the lower grades of elementary school. Great for older children to read with parents and discuss cultural differency and diversity.
“The story is very well written and told with unique sensitivity and understanding of the subject matter. It is ideal for stimulating discussion on the value of diversity, as parallel situations of children with parents of foreign origin are also depicted in the book”. From The Reykjavik judging committee's review.
