Outliers - The Story of Success - A Comprehensive Summary PART 1: HOW WE PERCEIVE SUCCESS The author starts by explaining that how most people look at success is wrong in many ways. As Gladwell explains his statements, we can quickly see that his definitions and explanations move away from the presumption that success is always influenced by someone’s talent, hard work and intelligence. Instead of mentioning and describing internal factors, Gladwell often focuses on external factors, such as referring to Canadian Hockey League players’ birthdates when describing them. When using birth dates as a reference point to determine someone’s potential for success, Gladwell says that if a person is born earlier in the year that person has better chances for success than people born later in the year. Later in the chapter, the author presents other examples that strengthen this idea (Baseball and Soccer teams). When talking about talent, the author says that, regardless of what the majority may think, talent is not something that is crucial for success. Talent is, according to Gladwell, not a vital ingredient that will determine whether someone will succeed or not. What exactly he believes about what most influences a person’s success is what we will be talking about in the second chapter.
